Caps and Mittens Fundraising Idea

With winter upon us, everyone needs caps, mittens, and neck scarves to help them stay warm. Why not have people from your organization make up some to sell for a fundraiser? Don’t limit yourself to one style or size; adults need these items as much as children do.
Not everyone can knit or crochet, but that’s not the only way to help with this project. While knit and crocheted mittens are warm and snuggly, in a cold climate when the wind is sharp it often finds its way through the stitching. Nice fleece liners will prevent this problem and keep everyone toasty warm in any weather.
The participants with sewing machines can make liners, while the more adept crafters can concentrate on transforming skeins of yarn into warm, cozy mittens and gloves. Be sure to make a few pairs with the fingertips left open for folks that need warm hands but have to be able to maneuver!
Contact stores with yarn and knitting supplies (they’ll have supplies for those who crochet, too) and ask if they’ll donate yarn and perhaps several patterns for your fundraising. Find a store that sells inexpensive fleece throw blankets and ask if they’ll donate several to use for mitten liners and lightweight scarves. Explain what you’re doing and who will benefit, and be sure to include free advertising for those kind enough to donate supplies.
Make up posters and flyers to distribute several weeks before the event. If you can include a few pictures of the handmade caps, mittens, and scarves available, people will know how nice and warm they look. Be sure to explain the intended use of the proceeds. Don’t forget to list the stores that donate supplies, as well as the dates, times, and locations the items will be up for sale.
Check with a mall to see if you can set up a booth or table for your sale location. If the proceeds are for a school, you may want to ask permission to sell them at school sporting events, too. To get the biggest volume sold, consider using both of these options at separate times. Multiple sales ort stands set up at more than one location will get more attention, and perhaps you can even convince a local radio van to be onsite.
For those who want to buy, but don’t really have a use for the hats and mittens, give them the option of buying and donating the items to a homeless shelter. Make this easy by supplying a box right at the sale location and then deliver the items to the shelter for them. This is a great way to raise money and do a good deed at the same time!
No matter who benefits from the proceeds of the winter caps and mittens fundraiser, everyone will be a winner when the weather is cold and their hands and heads are warm. Price individual hats, mitten or glove pairs at $6, and offer sets of a hat and the customer‘s choice of mittens or gloves for $10!
